As you get older, your face develops different types of wrinkles, which is why you often see descriptions like “fine lines” or “deep wrinkles.” The moderate to severe wrinkles that form between your eyebrows, across your forehead, and at the outside corners of your eyes are called dynamic wrinkles. They’re caused by muscles repeatedly contracting to form facial expressions over the years.
These muscles are connected to facial skin, so they can change your features to reflect a smile, surprise, worry, and other emotions. The same muscles constantly cause the same creases over the years. As your skin ages, it loses the strength and elasticity needed to keep its shape, so the creases gradually turn into permanent wrinkles.
Botox and Dysport are similar products. They’re both prepared from botulinum toxin and work the same way. However, their molecular structures are slightly different and that has a small impact on things like the amount used and the way they’re distributed following an injection.
Chances are you wouldn’t notice the difference in your appearance between the effect of Botox and Dysport, but one may be a better choice for your unique skin and the areas of your face being treated. You can be sure that Dr. Giannakakos will take the time to talk with you about which product he recommends.
It’s important to know that they’ve both been used for years and have been proven to be safe. Dysport may act sooner, so you may notice significant changes in 2-5 days with Dysport, while Botox may take 4-7 days. Otherwise, they’re equally effective.
When Botox and Dysport are injected into muscles, the muscles temporarily relax and stop contracting. As a result, even deep wrinkles are diminished or entirely eliminated. While both products are typically used to treat frown lines, crow’s feet, and forehead furrows, they may be used in other locations.
When Botox and Dysport are properly injected, only specific, small areas of muscles are affected, which means you can still move the rest of your face to show emotions. You may choose to get another treatment down the road, because both of these injectables gradually wear off in about 3-6 months.
